Registration for domain names and other data is still underway at ICANN, the global organization that oversees the world’s internet and the domain names it records.
A new ICANN Domain Name Registration Database, which will be launched in April 2018, is expected to record the names of approximately 500,000 domains, according to the company that runs the database.
The ICANN website states the database will record the registrar name, the domain registration details and the date the registration took place.
The registrar is the individual who signs up for the domain name.
It’s typically the registrant who decides which domain name to register, and they are required to keep that name registered.
ICANN has said it wants the data to be kept confidential.
“The ICAN data will be stored on an encrypted network and the ICANN database will be publicly accessible, so that the public can see the names and the registrants names and can compare them,” ICANN said in a statement.
“All data will remain confidential and will only be used for the purposes of providing services to the public.”
The database is expected help companies and other organizations in finding new domain names.
The company that owns the domain will then transfer the domain to another registrar and then register the new domain in its name, according the statement.ICANN says it will work with domain registries to ensure all information is available to the [email protected]
